SOC vs VAPT: why testing alone is not enough

Teams often ask whether they should invest in penetration testing or in a security operations centre (SOC). They answer different questions.

A test is a snapshot

VAPT tells you how an attacker could get in today. Once the report is closed and fixes are verified, you have a stronger system, but it keeps changing: new releases ship, new staff join, new cloud services appear and new vulnerabilities are published.

A SOC is continuous

A SOC correlates logs, endpoint activity, network traffic and cloud events around the clock, so that suspicious behaviour is noticed while it is happening. The usual flow is:

  1. Detect anomalies across cloud, network and endpoints.
  2. Investigate each alert, rule out false positives and confirm severity.
  3. Contain compromised accounts, hosts or connections.
  4. Remediate and report, with a root-cause write-up.

The aim is to contain an incident in minutes instead of discovering it weeks later during an audit.

How they work together

  • Testing reduces the number of ways in.
  • Monitoring catches what testing cannot predict.
  • Findings from tests tell the SOC what to watch more closely.
  • Incidents seen by the SOC tell you where to test next.

Where to start

If you have never been assessed, start with a security assessment to get a clear picture of current risk, then decide where testing or monitoring should come first. If you already test regularly but have no one watching, monitoring is probably the bigger gap.
